Pillar Drill - A Beginner's Guide

A pillar drill, also known as a bench drill or a drill press, is a very useful addition to any home or commercial workshop. In this beginner's guide you can get to know this valuable tool.

Dewalt Power Drill

Put simply, a pillar drill is a machine to drill precisely positioned holes, or holes to a very precise depth. It's such a valuable addition to the home workshop and you will find yourself bringing all kinds of jobs to this amazingly accurate, easy-to-use stationary drill.

Dewalt Power Drill

There are two main types of pillar drill, bench-mounted and floor-standing. The bench mounted models are often called bench drills, unsurprisingly, but are also referred to as pillar drills and drill presses. The floor-standing models, confusingly, are also referred to as pillar drills or drill presses, but not bench drills.

Floor-standing pillar drills tend to have more power than the bench-top models, with more attachments and accessories on offer, and so make ideal tools for the DIY or commercial workshop with a challenging range of drilling needs. The bench-top models are good all-round machines for the home enthusiast and come at a lower price.

There are several important features that make a pillar drill so very versatile and useful for the home. The first is the number of speed settings. The bit needs to rotate at different speeds to drill through different materials, and the diameter of the hole also requires different settings. The typical range of drills has models with between five and 16 speed settings, but some even have as many as 19 different settings.

Depth stops allow you to drill part-way through a work piece, as the bit will only be allowed to drop to a certain point. They're great if you need to drill a large number of identical holes too.

The spindle-to-column distance is the maximum distance from the edge of the work piece that you can drill a hole. If you are new to this, the spindle is the place where the drill bit is, and the column is the thick circular vertical part of the stand that supports the whole tool. Be aware that if you want to drill a hole, say, 150mm from the edge of a piece of work, you will need a drill with a spindle-to-column distance of 150mm but this would be known as a "300mm" drill.

Probably the most important accessory for a pillar drill in the fence, a straight border that holds work in place and is good for making several similar holes. You can also get things like sanding drums, yet another use for this great tool.

Drill bits are one of the most important parts of the rig, and there are different types for different materials. Steel for softwood, cobalt bits for metal etc. When you come to buy bits, you will see that it's easy because what you can use them for is usually stated quite clearly.

If you choose your pillar drill carefully, it will be a tool that saves you a lot of time and gives you greater scope in your work.

Kawasaki Cordless Drills Review - Worth the Money Or Not?

Kawasaki Cordless Drills tend to fly under the radar. Obviously they aren't known for their power tools prowess-this is more of a recreational vehicle company-and many aren't even aware they make drills at all.

Dewalt Power Drill

They make a 19v model, and this is their main model. Its' cheap-it sells for just -so do you get what you pay for?

Dewalt Power Drill

Power

It goes up to 1100 RPMs, which is a pretty respectable number considering the cheap price. And it's actually quite powerful despite its' low price tag.

Chuck size

It can only hold smaller bits-the chuck is just 3/8 inches.

Batteries

This one uses NiCad batteries... and they are known for giving out very quickly when used in excess. If you are just a "handyman" who uses it around the house every now and then, Kawasaki Cordless Drills will do the trick. But if you plan on doing BIG projects, avoid this one.

Who's it made by?

It is NOT made by Kawasaki--and you won't find anything about it on their website. It's actually made by AllTrade-and this company is known for their lousy customer service.

If you buy it, you'd better hope you never have to replace anything-it might never get done.

The bottom line:

Most of the complaints around this drill are from those who've attempted to use it a lot for bigger projects like putting in a hardwood floor, installing a deck, etc.

It's NOT built for BIG projects

If you are a heavy duty industrial worker--this is NOT your machine. But if you are planning on using it for smaller things-such as driving screws into more forgiving kinds of wood--then Kawasaki Cordless Drills will get the job done.

Cordless Hammer Drill - Ryobi Cordless Drill

Cordless hammer drills are a must tool in any craftsman's or DIY enthusiasts' toolbox. The invention of the cordless drill and other cordless tools have made life much easier than lugging cables to and fro and are also much safer.

Dewalt Power Drill

Most cordless hammer drills are 18 volt and are very powerful to drill materials like steel, wood, masonry and any surface a mains electric drill would be used for. The ideal way to work would be to have two batteries so one is always charging while you are using the other. The hammer action is a must when drilling concrete or masonry.

Dewalt Power Drill

A cordless drill is quite suitable for drilling materials like wood, plastic and steel, but for a little more you would an all round drill in a cordless hammer drill. These drills can also be used as a power screw driver and with the reverse gear you are able to unscrew tight screws with ease. They come in 2 speeds and some have variable speed control also.

Powerful Ryobi hammer drills have a second handle attached to allow you grab the drill with both hands when drilling hard surfaces or when using large bits. These drills come with keyless chucks and capable of taking half inch or 13mm bits. One thing to remember if you want a hole half inch in diameter, begin with a small bit and use a several bits in between before using the half inch bit. This will prolong the life of your drill and is also a safe manner in which to work in.

Whether you use a powerful, cordless hammer drill or a mains electric drill the main requirement to drill holes especially in steel is a sharp bit; Bits for drilling steel lose their sharpness over time but can be sharpened on a grinding stone to their original state. One tip is to use some cooling liquid like oil or a mixture of oil and water; this will help to maintain the lifespan of the bits.

When using a drill make sure to wear safety goggles and do not have any loose clothing like long sleeves which could get wound around the bit and cause a serious accident. These cordless hammer drills are not toys and care should be taken when using them.

Lithium Ion Batteries - What You Need to Know About Li-Ion Technology

Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery technology is one of the fastest growing trends in the tool community, and certainly for good reason. Lithium Ion batteries have the best energy to weight ratio, meaning they pack the most power with the smallest amount of bulk. They also experience no memory effect or, lazy battery effect. This occurs when a battery can no longer accept a maximum charge for having been repeatedly recharged without being fully used (a common symptom of Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries). Li-Ion batteries, conversely, have absolutely no memory and can continually accept a maximum charge. Additionally, Lithium Ion batteries have a very slow rate of charge loss while the battery is disengaged.

Dewalt Power Drill

What is the difference between Lithium Batteries and Lithium Ion Batteries?

Dewalt Power Drill

The difference is in the chemistry; a Lithium battery is a disposable power source composed of lithium metal compounds - the key word, here, being disposable; Lithium batteries can not be recharged. Lithium Ion batteries, on the other hand, are intercalated, meaning the lithium ion inside the battery moves between two internal electrodes. This movement, or reversibility of the lithium ion accounts for the battery's rechargeability.

What are the benefits of Lithium Ion Technology?

-- Lithium Ion batteries hold a lot of power and are surprisingly light-weight, especially with consideration to other rechargeable batteries.
-- Li-Ion batteries combine single cell technology with a greater energy reservoir than Nickel Metal Hydride and Nickel Cadmium batteries. They store more power for their size than both NiCad and NiMH.
-- Li-Ion batteries hold their charge for significantly longer than other comparable batteries, and provide steady power until that charge is completely gone. Other batteries gradually and consistently loose power as you work. Li-Ion batteries stay strong until the last push.

Are there disadvantages to using Lithium Ion Batteries?

The disadvantages with using Li-Ion battery technology are generally few and far between, and technological advancements are making them even less so. Manufacturers have recently improved the Lithium Ion recipe to reveal a more reliable battery. Still, every giant has its weaknesses:

-- Li-Ion batteries are sensitive to intense hot and cold temperatures. In extreme temperature conditions, the battery will degrade more quickly.
-- Li-Ion batteries degrade regardless frequency of use.
-- The Li-Ion battery's built-in computer chip tells the battery to refuse a charge once the batteries power falls below a certain point. If this occurs, the battery is beyond repair.

Although these defects are more applicable to the older Lithium Ion batteries, the possibility of seeing these problems is still worth noting. Fortunately, these said defects are fairly rare, and easily avoided.

-- Store Li-Ion batteries (and other batteries as well) in a cool, dry place.
-- Use your Li-Ion batteries often.
-- Be certain Li-Ion batteries have a full charge before storing them, and pull them out every so often to use and recharge. Watch the batteries power level to be sure it doesn't fall below the charge limit.

General Li-Ion Battery Tips:

-- On occasion Lithium Ion batteries require more than one charge (sometimes 2 to even 10) to accept a full charge. The first time you charge your battery, leave it to charge over night. This ensures you'll have maximum power for your first use.
-- To maintain proper balance in your battery, leave it charge over night about once per week for the life of the battery.
-- When buying a new Lithium Ion battery, make certain you are buying a fresh one. There's a chance a battery has been degrading on the shelfs of manufacturer's and distributor's so be certain you are buying a new one. Most manufacturers provide a date code on the battery or packaging. Check dates before you purchase, and be confident you are getting a fresh, high-performance battery.

Bosch Drill Brush Replacement

Replacing the brushes in our power drills is simply a fact of life. Just as sure as the sun rises, craftsmen will be changing the brushes in their power drills. Luckily though, a Bosch drill brush replacement is far easier than you might think. Following just a few simple steps will get you to the end of you brush replacement in a snap.

Dewalt Power Drill

The first of these steps may seem a bit self-explanatory, but, as we all know, a simple mistake can take hold of anyone at anytime; I figure it's much better to be safe than sorry. So, begin with reading your drill's manual. This is more important than you might think; you'll find valuable information pertaining to your brush repair and to other repairs in the future. You need also ensure that your replacement brushes are the exact type built for your specific drill; any random drill brush will not perform in your model. Lastly, triple check that your drill is totally disengaged.

Dewalt Power Drill

From this point you need to locate the brushes on your drill; they should be at the back of the tool. To expose them you will have either an end cap or brush covers. Each are a part of the housing (usually a different color) that can be removed without opening-up the entire drill housing. The end cap will be a dome-shaped piece at the very back of the drill, and the brush covers will be located (also at the back) on either side of the tool. If the drill does not have either, you will need to entirely open-up the housing, which is, essentially, no more difficult, but the brushes may be a bit more hidden. They will, however, be at the back of the motor at the very back of the tool.

After gaining access to the brushes you can simply pull them from their guide sleeves and insert the new brushes in their place. Be sure to replace the new brushes in the exact orientation the old ones were removed. Also be sure that the brushes are making complete contact with armature. And, as if that weren't simple enough, you're done. Well, almost, I suppose.

Reassemble the tool carefully and precisely to ensure everything goes back together correctly and give the tool a quick whirl testing the drill's functions to make sure all is well. If by some terrible chance all has not gone well, make sure that simple mistake hasn't grabbed hold of you and retrace your steps. If no mistake becomes apparent, take the the drill to a Bosch factory authorized service center for a more complete inspection.

And that's it; remember your manual and to always be focused and you should champion that Bosch drill brush replacement in no time.

Shopping For A Woodworking Drill Press? Read This First!

At the risk of stating the obvious, I'd like to point out that the purpose of a drill press is to drill consistently straight holes accurately into wood, metal or plastic. The purpose of a drill press with a fence is to drill repetitive holes in a work piece at a consistent distance from the edge of a work piece. The purpose of a drill press with a fence and one (or two) stops is to drill holes at a consistent distance from one or both ends of a work piece or work pieces. The purpose of a drill press with a tilting table is to drill accurate and repeatable holes at an exact angle into the work piece. The purpose of an electric drill is to drill holes only where using a drill press would be impossible or impractical.

Dewalt Power Drill

There are many things to consider when comparing drill presses such as motor size, table size and features, quill stroke, task lighting, laser availability, rotation speeds, ease of speed change, number of speeds, reversible feed handle (for lefties) and even the size of the base (for machine stability).

Dewalt Power Drill

With regard to motor size, experience tells me that 3/4 horsepower is about the smallest size motor I'd like to see on a drill press. Some models try to get away with a 1/2 horsepower motor. There are times, especially at higher belt speed ratios that a half horsepower motor will prove to be inadequate.

I recently completed a side-by-side comparison review of 3 drill presses from three different manufacturers. The Powermatic 2800 PM was, by far, the most expensive I reviewed. The other 2 drill presses I considered are competitive with each other and list for about half the price of the Powermatic. I am discussing the 2800 PM as an example of what a drill press could be if money were no object. The other drill presses I reviewed were both very capable machines and would definitely do the job in an average woodworking shop.

The thing about the Powermatic is that it is just plain neat! It has all the bells and whistles a designer could dream up. The person who designed this thing clearly knows a lot about drill presses and woodworking from personal experience. If money were no object it would be the drill press I would buy. A guy can dream, can't he?

Like any Powermatic machine, this drill press has top quality, smooth operation and features to die for. It also has a somewhat hefty price tag when compared to other similar machines. That said, let's take a look at what you get for your money so you can decide if it's worth making the jump.

This drill press features twin LED lights, mounted in the head that do not cast shadows, head-mounted twin lasers that pinpoint the drill point, a 16" x 14" table with twin T-slots that expands to 16" x 26" when needed to support large work pieces. The table tilts left or right 90 degrees with a positive stop at zero degrees. A large handle makes raising or lowering the table easy. An additional, unique feature that is included in the price of this machine is an adjustable split fence with a dust collection port. A fence is essential to production work so plan on buying or making one if you don't buy this machine.

Speeds are easily changed from 400 to 3000 RPM with a handle on the upper left side of the head, meaning that you do not need to concern yourself with belt and pulley access. And, you can tell how fast or slow the machine is running by looking at a digital speed indicator right on the front of the head. Also in the front of the head is a lighted on/off switch with a key.

Powermatic gives you a full horsepower of motor power which insures that this machine can handle everything that is presented to it. The motor is single-phase and can be run on either 115 or 230 volts AC. It is pre-wired for 115 volts.

The 5/8" chuck is keyless, the depth stop is quick-setting and the feed handles can be mounted on the left or the right for ease of operation no matter which handle you like to use. Spindle travel is 4 3/8" for deep drilling capacity. For drilling into assembled projects, the maximum chuck to table distance is 30" and the maximum chuck to floor distance is 46". The column diameter is 3 1/8", the base measures 11 7/8" x 19 5/8". The drill press weighs in at 287 lbs, and ships at 302 lbs.

As much as I like this machine, in this economy, I might be wise to settle for a good machine from, say, Delta or Jet. At least I know what the possibilities are before I wake up and stop dreaming!

Top Power Tools for Home Improvement

When trying to renovate your home, there are reliable tools that will help you make the task a little easier. There are power tools that you should have based on what you need to work on in your house.

Dewalt Power Drill

First, you will need a table saw for your minor or major wood cutting tasks. A table saw will be easy to manipulate. This will be helpful when you need to cut wood when you are building a furniture or when you are fixing parts of the house.

Dewalt Power Drill

But, do keep in mind that a table saw can be a very dangerous machine. So, keep kids away from it. Also, remember not to operate the machine when you have had something to drink or if you have taken medication that can compromise your alertness and ability to respond quickly.

Then, you will also need a miter saw. This will help you in creating trim stocks or in framing wood. You can have the plastic miter saw but you can also have a sliding compound miter saw for more durability. The difference in performance between the plastic and the compound types are also significant with the compound miter saw getting more positive votes.

Another power tool that you would want to have is a circular saw. This is best for those who have tasks who have a lot of cutting tasks. A circular saw can be easier to manipulate than a table saw. Not to mention that it is generally cheaper than a table saw or a miter saw.

When choosing which saw to have, you also have to consider the quality of cut that it will create. There are different brands out there that have different results. So, it is important that you choose the best one.

Of course, a power drill is always necessary in a house especially when you are doing improvements with it. The most common power drills that you will need are a 3/8" and a ½" drill. These would be enough for the everyday things and renovation related tasks that will require the presence of a power drill.

There are also cordless drill than the connected ones that are available. A cordless drill can give you more freedom to reach areas that the electric wirings cannot access.

Drills can be used to create clean holes in a variety of surfaces. They can be used with wood, concrete, masonry, and a few more.

Also, there might be a need for you to get an orbital sander. They are easy to use and are generally not that expensive. You can use these to smooth out either wooden or metal surfaces. This orbital sander will be best to use on items that can be easily damaged. The smoothing process can be more controlled and thus the finish is more delicate and is smoother. However, these types of sanders can be more expensive than a palm sander. So, if you have tasks that require sanding but do not necessarily have to worry about some damage to the material, you can stick to a palm sander to be able to save a few bucks.
