A pillar drill, also known as a bench drill or a drill press, is a very useful addition to any home or commercial workshop. In this beginner's guide you can get to know this valuable tool.
Put simply, a pillar drill is a machine to drill precisely positioned holes, or holes to a very precise depth. It's such a valuable addition to the home workshop and you will find yourself bringing all kinds of jobs to this amazingly accurate, easy-to-use stationary drill.
Dewalt Power Drill
There are two main types of pillar drill, bench-mounted and floor-standing. The bench mounted models are often called bench drills, unsurprisingly, but are also referred to as pillar drills and drill presses. The floor-standing models, confusingly, are also referred to as pillar drills or drill presses, but not bench drills.
Floor-standing pillar drills tend to have more power than the bench-top models, with more attachments and accessories on offer, and so make ideal tools for the DIY or commercial workshop with a challenging range of drilling needs. The bench-top models are good all-round machines for the home enthusiast and come at a lower price.
There are several important features that make a pillar drill so very versatile and useful for the home. The first is the number of speed settings. The bit needs to rotate at different speeds to drill through different materials, and the diameter of the hole also requires different settings. The typical range of drills has models with between five and 16 speed settings, but some even have as many as 19 different settings.
Depth stops allow you to drill part-way through a work piece, as the bit will only be allowed to drop to a certain point. They're great if you need to drill a large number of identical holes too.
The spindle-to-column distance is the maximum distance from the edge of the work piece that you can drill a hole. If you are new to this, the spindle is the place where the drill bit is, and the column is the thick circular vertical part of the stand that supports the whole tool. Be aware that if you want to drill a hole, say, 150mm from the edge of a piece of work, you will need a drill with a spindle-to-column distance of 150mm but this would be known as a "300mm" drill.
Probably the most important accessory for a pillar drill in the fence, a straight border that holds work in place and is good for making several similar holes. You can also get things like sanding drums, yet another use for this great tool.
Drill bits are one of the most important parts of the rig, and there are different types for different materials. Steel for softwood, cobalt bits for metal etc. When you come to buy bits, you will see that it's easy because what you can use them for is usually stated quite clearly.
If you choose your pillar drill carefully, it will be a tool that saves you a lot of time and gives you greater scope in your work.
